From sunlight to electricity
Solar panels are made of cells that convert sunlight directly into electricity through a physical effect: when light hits the cell's material, it knocks electrons loose, and that flow of electrons is electric current. It happens silently, with no moving parts, which is why panels are so durable and low-maintenance. That direct conversion of light to power is the heart of the whole technology. The parts of a system
- Panels. Capture sunlight and produce direct current (DC) electricity.
- Inverter. Converts that DC into the alternating current (AC) that homes and the grid use. The system's translator.

- Wiring and connections. Carry the power safely and tie the system into the building and the grid.
- Meter and monitoring. Track how much the system produces and how it's performing.
How it connects to your life
Most home systems stay connected to the grid. When the sun shines, the panels power the home and any excess flows back to the grid, often earning credit; when they don't produce enough, the home draws from the grid as usual.
